History
Balboa Island, once a mere mudflat surrounded by swampland, underwent a transformation that began in the late 1860s when the McFadden brothers acquired a significant portion of what would become Newport. By 1908, after dredging a channel and depositing the sand onto what was known as "Snipe Island," Balboa Island began to emerge. The introduction of the ferry service in 1919 further cemented the island's place as a beloved residential and recreational hub in Newport Harbor.
